An image from Syria

Image
Dark Clouds over Syria , Oil on Canvas (2012) by Ashok Malhotra Usually my mind is focused on happy thoughts when I play with forms and colors on a canvas. However, this one is an exception. It was created when thoughts were focused on the tragedy that is unfolding in Syria - violence and destruction. Can the crisis in Syria be solved? For sure it can. An easy solution is here: http://ashokmalhotra.wordpress.com/2013/08/22/need-for-a-new-international-law-to-save-humans-syria/ Why is the solution not being implemented? Perhaps the world wants to sell more guns for profit How many more guns must be sold, how much more blood must flow before peace comes to the people of Syria and refugees including sweet children, just as sweet as yours or mine can return home? Update 2016: The war in Syria has gone on even more than four years after this note. This painting still remains in my possession and now I prefer to call it Dark Clouds of Armageddon. The red color

Constructive Postmodernism

Image
My worldview, as displayed in my writings (some of which may be found in my other blog at http://someitemshave.blogspot.com/ ) and art, may be described in the words of Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe, Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, USA, “Constructive postmodernism claims to offer a new unity of scientific, ethical, aesthetic, and religious intuitions. It rejects not science as such, but only that scientific approach in which only the data of the modern natural sciences are allowed to contribute to the construction of our worldview. Constructive postmodernism desires a return to premodern notions of divinely wrought reality, of cosmic meaning, and an enchanted nature”

A Tsunami in Gray Scales

Image
A Tsunami in Gray Scales Digital Art composition by Ashok Malhotra Most of my print publications are printed in black and white in order to keep costs within reasonable limits. That requires some art work in scales of gray. This one entitled Tsunami in gray scales is one that I have used in a technical publication - Engineering Steam tables- that is popular among students of Mechanical Engineering in several universities. I also used this image to develop a poster during the aftermath of the most unfortunate Japanese Tsunami last year. That poster can be viewed in my other blog - http://someitemshave.blogsot.com

A Study in Red

Image
A Study in Red: Thorns on a Creeping Branch Digital Art Composition by Ashok Malhotra This is a completely digital work of art created on my computer from fractal images. I call it very simply 'A Study in Red' . I took up digital art when I found that I needed some art images for my online and print publications. It takes me months to complete a work of art in oil on canvas. On the other hand digital creations can be made much more quickly. Certainly they are no match for a work of art on canvas that can last for centuries, but when it comes to an image for a print publication, they are just fine. I have kept the resolution intentionally low in this work because that suffices and then it can be uploaded quickly.

A Blog on Art

Until five years ago, I had a blog on art but then professional pursuits engaged me so that I had to move away from art and delete the blog. Recently on a google search of contemporary Asian art, I discovered that although there is much exciting information on the art from China, there was little such information about the contemporary art from India. One reason for this is that artists from India have made little effort to display their work to the world. Therefore I am relaunching this new blog on art. My own work is only a small sample of what is available in India today. However, art has been a passion for me as long as I can remember and today this new blog is being launched to share some of my thoughts and works of art and to hear your views. The name of the blog is Form and Color because for me art means a combination of light and shadows, form and color, in a manner that makes an emotional impact on the viewer, because it is the emotional content of thoughts that make them memo
