Dark Matter

Image
Light and Dark - Digital art by Ashok Malhotra Consciousness observing the mind generates love and hatred, joy and sorrow. The human mind plays with opposites of heat and cold, dark and light, lies and truth. The underlying consciousness is a manifestation of what is called dark matter by scientists in living beings, just as gravity is one of its manifestations in inanimate matter. It is the source of feelings and emotions that arise from the consciousness. Fire cannot burn it nor can water make it wet. It is beyond the physical laws because it is a source of them. Focused on an individual life form, it is what sages call a soul. It is but a part of the sea of dark matter that pervades the created universe and is a source of it all. It has been termed as dark matter by scientists but a more correct terminology is eternal matter because it existed before the created universe came into being and will continue to exist even after the created universe dissolves in it fo...

Artists that make their own paths

Image
Fire Birds by Jean Grant Horner While many artists derive their methods and mediums from earlier established ones. There are some that break the mould and create their own innovative mediums and methods for their artistic expressions. Jean Grant Horner, a Canadian artist is one such. The adjoining named,Fire Birds, a sample of her work. In her own words " My primary interest is in colour and texture. I love the texture of old walls found in the historic sites of the South West and Mexico. Touching them connects me with the hands that made them. Whether I am working with pastels or arcylics I incorporate texture." To me personally the combination of red, black and mustard yellow colors on their own may represent the evil side of the universe but the additional of a color like white to the composition can completely change the work to an esoteric one as in this painting. Jean Grant Horner lives in the idyllic surroundings of her country estate at Qualicum Beach ...

Difficulties In Photographing Paintings

Image
The oil paintings shown in this blog are still in my possession. I photographed them at home with a digital camera that I purchased from a shop called Dayal Radio in Nainital a few years ago. It is a really old shop from which my dad had purchased a radio decades ago. Now it sells other goods such as cameras. I am not much of a photographer but the Himalayan scenery in and around Nainital is so beautiful that I just had to capture some. The camera has been great for photographing scenery and people. Some of the photographs are in my other blogs. However the problem with trying to photograph an oil painting is that the colors and picture does not come out exactly like the original. It is influenced by lighting, angle etc. and it does not help if one is an amateur photographer like me.After one has snapped the photo with some of the wall too one can crop it with digital programs to remove as much of the wall and/or frame that one wishes to. The problem did not end here because the...

Art and Spirituality

An artist may create a work of art in the privacy of his studio but once created it is often put on display where one or more persons views it several times. Every time it is viewed, it produces an emotional impact on the psyche of the beholder. Every notable work of art must produce such an impact, and depending on the kind of impact produced, a certain karma – good or bad is produced for the creator- the artist. Using materials and techniques that are long lasting often creates many works of art that last for generations. Thus the karma they generate can be substantial. This blog is one on art; therefore the spiritual details of the principle of karma are not discussed here. These will be found in another blog of mine devoted largely to spirituality ( http://someitemshave.blogspot.com/ ). Here it may be pointed out that every act of a human produces a karmic result. Every word spoken by a human too produces karma. Kind words produce good karma whereas harsh words may produce a b...
